F L A T I R O N Women | Anthea O'Connor
In this series, we team up a stellar collection of women who we admire for their unique personal style and the way they celebrate their individuality through what they wear.
We get to know them a little more and explore their take on FLATIRON.
Fashion stylist and presenter
Anthea O’Connor, is a long-time FLATIRON friend. She has an incredible back-catalogue of fashion experience including a decade as the former Melbourne editor of Vogue Australia. Her style is streamlined, refined but effortlessly sophisticated. She’s mindful of excess and is a big believer that less is always more – think timeless appeal and quality craftsmanship. We recently asked Anthea to share how she likes to wear some of her favourite pieces from our latest collection,
Ode to Joy.
A typical day in my life sees me…trying to jam too much in usually! I exercise most days so I get that done early after I have got the kids to school. Then it is into the work day, which during lock down in Melbourne has meant doing client styling work remotely via Zoom. The nature of my work when scouting fashion pieces for my clients is that I do much of it remotely. So this unusual time in Melbourne has still meant I have been able to connect and work with my clients, which has been fabulous.
A career highlight has been…..my time as the Melbourne Editor for Vogue Australia. It was such a privilege to be a part of such an esteemed fashion publication. To see my words in print and my stories on the pages of Vogue was as thrilling at the end of a decade as it was at the start. I have really loved working in television as a fashion presenter over the years as I love the chatty conversational aspect of it and imparting style advice to women of all ages. But an equal highlight is the career I have carved out since leaving Vogue and growing my private client styling and fashion presenting business. I truly love working with my clients, most I have had for nearly a decade.
I think the foundation pieces in any wardrobe are…pants, pants and pants. Then a fabulous well-cut blazer, some great shirts, a good white and striped t-shirt and too many pairs of sneakers.
My style mantra is…Buy better and buy less. Wear your good stuff; don’t save it for “special occasions”. Buy something you truly love that is a beautiful, special piece and wear the heck out of it and enjoy it every day. Having less, but pieces that you truly love and feel great in, is much more rewarding and satisfying than having cupboards overflowing with items you never get to.
The thing that brings me joy…depends what day it is! Sometimes just simple things tick the boxes, other days it is getting through a big fat list of stuff that had to be done. JOY-OUS! Seeing my words and travel stories on Vogueliving.com recently re-ignited my love for travel writing. Seeing a successful work project through to completion gives me immense joy, as I really, really like working and what I do. Of course being on holiday with my family and friends and having a sundowner has to be right up there too.
I am excited about…travelling again!
What I love about F L A T I R O N is….that the pants have such an amazing cut. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them. Just so right. And more importantly I love the two girls behind FLATIRON for their vision and commitment to delivering a unique and Melbourne made product in a gorgeous retail environment. This is getting harder to do, and the girls do it so well.My favourite piece is…well of course the high waisted wide leg pants! They are my daily uniform now I have burned all my leisure wear post lockdown!
