F L A T I R O N Women | Jan Vogelpoel
Our FLATIRON Woman this month is Sculptural Ceramic Artist, Jan Vogelpoel. Born in the UK, raised in South Africa and now based in Melbourne, Jan’s one-off sculptural organically-shaped pieces reflect her passion for the process of encapsulating the energy of nature and the maker. Here she talks to us about her most productive time of day, favourite piece of clothing, creative inspirations and bucket list dream!
What are three things that make up the perfect day?
A brisk morning nature walk, good coffee and sunshine!
When are you most productive, and why?
Early morning - I think inspiration and ideas are percolating while I'm sleeping and reveal themselves when I wake up! It's a really great way to start the day! inspired and itchy to get going!
One item of clothing you can’t do without right now?
Jeans! - my go to for comfy clay clothes!
Next on the bucket list?
I'm busy building a mini monument which I can imagine as a huge public sculpture (in my dreams). A trip to Europe via London!
What would you tell your younger self about shopping for fashion?
Individual style rules! Be true to yourself!
Favourite FLATIRON piece?
The 2 degree jumpsuit! The luxe denim linen is so comfy and a great versatile piece!
Three iconic people you’d most like to have a pow-wow with?
Only 3? Today it would be: Barbara Hepworth, Florence Welch, John Lautner! Tomorrow maybe: Guy Ritchie, Alexander McQueen, Carlo Scarpa!
What inspires you creatively?
Architecture and Nature but I'm particularly drawn to mid century modern design!
Jan is super passionate about her work and we get that!
She's represented by Craft Victoria, Becker Minty and Anifsa Design but is also available for commissions!
